Glenmorangie Distillery – Scottish Whiskey Heritage from the Heart of the Highlands
Glenmorangie – the Highland icon with proud traditions
In the rolling countryside of the northern Highlands, Glenmorangie Distillery overlooks the Dornoch Firth, where the production of alcohol has its roots dating back to the Middle Ages. Here, where the mists roll in from the North Sea, Glenmorangie has made its home, building on a history of both passion and precision.
A legacy from 1843 – and long before
Glenmorangie was officially founded in 1843 by William Matheson, but the area had long been known for its home-distilled whisky. The distillery was built on the site of an old brewery, leading to the choice of taller copper stills – originally intended for brewing beer – which remain part of Glenmorangie’s signature process.
The world's tallest stills
One of Glenmorangie’s most notable features is their 8-metre-high stills – the tallest in Scotland. This means that only the lightest and most delicate vapours reach the top, giving Glenmorangie whiskies their characteristic floral and elegant flavours. It is this process that contributes to the distillery’s signature: a smooth, complex and fruity whisky with great finesse.
The Importance of Wood – The Wood Finishing Pioneers
Glenmorangie was among the first to experiment systematically with 'wood finishing' - maturing whisky in different types of casks after primary ageing. This has given new depth to their range, with sherry, Madeira and port casks used to create rich, diverse flavour profiles. The distillery has helped shape an entire direction in modern Scotch whisky.
Sustainability and nature conservation
Glenmorangie also takes responsibility for the nature around them today – among other things, they actively work to protect the nearby Dornoch Firth, a unique marine ecosystem. Thus, combining expertise in spirits with respect for the Scottish landscape, the distillery is much more than just a whisky producer.
