Midleton Distillery: Ireland's iconic whiskey cathedral where Jameson, Redbreast and Powers are born

Introduction Midleton Distillery in County Cork is not only Ireland's largest distillery; it is the very hub of the modern Irish whiskey world. Behind the whitewashed walls and gleaming copper stills, names such as Jameson, Redbreast, Powers, Green Spot and Writers' Tears are born - an impressive portfolio that grows year by year. Since 1975, Midleton has combined traditional pot-still craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, taking Irish whiskey to new heights.

The story behind the distillery

Midleton dates back to 1825, when the Murphy brothers opened their Old Midleton Distillery. When competition from Scotch whisky squeezed the industry, the major Irish producers joined forces under Irish Distillers in 1966. The result was the current Midleton, built a few hundred meters from the historic facility. Today, guided tours wind through both the old stone cellars and the ultra-modern production halls, where the world's largest pot still – 75,000 liters – shines like a copper monument to the distillery's heritage.

Production and craftsmanship

Midleton is famous for its Single Pot Still expressions. Malted and unmalted barley are mashed together, distilled three times and rested in both American bourbon casks and European sherry casks. The combination gives a nutty body, creamy mouthfeel and spicy finish – characteristics that are clearly encountered in Redbreast 12 YO and Green Spot. The distillery's gigantic capacity also allows for small experiments such as the Method & Madness series, where chestnut casks or virgin Irish oak leave new taste imprints.

Location and surroundings

County Cork’s mild, humid climate is ideal for cask ageing: temperatures rarely fluctuate wildly and the salty Atlantic breezes contribute to slow maturation. The region has been growing barley since Celtic times, and many suppliers are within a few hours’ drive – a local terroir that is reflected in the whisky.
